INVESTIGATION OF SAFE MEASURES IN HANDLING OF EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS IN SEISMIC OPERATIONS

Abstract

This paper focused on safety in handling of explosive materials in seismic operation in one of the Petroleum Company in Nigeria. This is to determine workers safety measures in handling explosive materials. The method employed was the use of checklist that contains questions on safe awareness, safe practices, safe conditions and safe housekeeping in the company. The areas audited were storage section, administrative section and transportation section of the organisation. The statistical data obtained were analyzed by using simple percentage. The results of the findings from the organisation shows that the average level of safe awareness in handling of explosives materials is 66.67%, that of safe practices is 62.22%,53.33% for safe conditions, while safe housekeeping 60% respectively. However, the safety measures of the operative sections for storage and transportation units are at acceptable level of percentage guide range between 75% and 100%. Conclusion drawn from the results indicates that improvement and
monitoring of safety measures is needed of the organisation. Appropriate recommendations were made in regards to handling of explosives materials by workers in the oil and gas sector of the industry.
