THE CONSTRAINTS AND IMPACT OF DEMOCRACY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: A STUDY OF AFRICAN STATES

Abstract

This study examines the constraints and impact of democracy on development in developing countries, with a particular focus on African states. It seeks to establish the relationship between democratic governance and socio-economic development, emphasizing how successful democratic processes, particularly through credible electoral systems, can promote effective governance and sustainable development. The study evaluates the performance of democracy in Africa during the twenty-first century by assessing both its achievements and the challenges that have hindered its effectiveness. It also examines the extent to which African states have developed the institutional and political capacity necessary to support democratic governance and national development. Furthermore, the study explores the relationship between democracy, peace, and political stability, analyzing how these factors influence governance and development across the continent. Based on its findings, the study offers recommendations aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting sustainable growth and overall development in Africa.
