STUDY OF THE ORGANIZATION OF INFORMATION IN LIBRARIES OF THE STATE TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN YOBE STATE-NIGERIA
Abstract
This research focuses on the utilization of information resources in Yobe State tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The issue that requires consideration is how these resources are organized to fill the information needs of users. Three research questions were considered to gather data. The sample size of the study was 394 based on values from Yamane (1967) formula. Thus, a total number of 394 questionnaires were distributed among students in the six State Tertiary Institutions. But, all the library staff were considered because their number was small (73). The findings revealed as obtained in table 3 that majority of the students, representing 59. 8% was getting the needed materials when they searched by themselves that is, without catalogue. From the findings of the study, it was observed that, even though resources and some major services were available, patronage was generally low. It is thus recommended that the catalogue should respond to various user approaches. Efforts should be made to ensure that all entries in the catalogue correspond with what is on the shelves. In addition, the institution should employ adequate library staff in both quantity and quality. These categories of staff in the library are essential in ensuring that available resources and services are effectively utilized by readers.
