IMPACT OF TRUANCY ON STUDENT’S PERFORMANCE IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN PLATEAU SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF BASSA L.G.A PLATEAU STATE
Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate “Impact of truancy on student’s performance in social studies in Plateau School for the Deaf Bassa L.G.A Plateau State. One hundred (100) participants were randomly selected and use for the study. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. A survey research design was adopted for the study, structured questionnaire instrument was used to collect data and the data was analyzed using frequency count and mean. It was revealed that there is serious truancy problem among JSS 2 with hearing impairment in Plateau School for the Deaf Bassa L.G.A Plateau State during Social Studies lesson is poor, it was accepted that negative attitude towards Social Studies contributed to the poor attendance being experience during teaching and learning process, that students are in the habit of skipping Social Studies lesson because they have no learning materials, that there is a disposition of negative attitude by parents towards Social Studies this in returned encouraged their wards to do the same toward the subject, the study revealed that other students skipped Social Studies (SOS) lesson due to peer pressure, the study also revealed that some students deliberately skipped Social Studies lecture because their teachers lack the pre-requisite experience to teach SOS while another group hold to the belief of their skipping off SOS because the course is difficult, the study revealed that truancy has affected the implementation of SOS curriculum in JSS 2, also according to the study it was revealed that many students who failed SOS are products of absenteeism, the study revealed that truancy never affect performance in other subjects, this is to say SOS is the worst hit with truancy problem so far from the data collected Pankshin LGA, the study indicated that there should be parent/teacher meeting with in order to brainstorm truancy issue with a view to reduce the problem among JSS 2 students, also the study accepted that counseling services could be adopted to mitigate the problem of truancy, The researcher recommended that parents should develop positive interest toward Social Studies subject so as to encourage their wards, teachers should improve in the area of motivation, students, who hitherto were truants but improve their attendance to SOS lesson should be reinforce in order to attract the other rebellious truants who refused to attend lesson regularly, that school authority should employ for more effort by counselors to counsel students with truancy and their parents on the problem of missing SOS lesson, that counselors should provide psychological and emotional counseling to students who are truants, that Government should provide SOS teaching and learning facilities such as text books, atlas, over head projectors, SOS resource room among others to motivate offering of SOS subject among JSS in Plateau School for the Deaf Bassa L.G.A Plateau State
